About Cancun, Mexico
Cancún is a Mexican city on the Yucatán Peninsula bordering the Caribbean Sea. The city has found world fame thanks to its beaches, numerous resorts and abundant nightlife. The more traditional downtown area, El Centro, is a more tranquil and upscale area, while the Zona Hotelera is a long, beachfront strip of high-rise hotels, nightclubs, shops and restaurants. Cancun also becomes very busy during the spring break period, when hoards of students arrive in masses.
For an even better and more authentic experience, venture out and explore more of the Quintana Roo state. Just a day trip away from Cancún, the pristine national park of Isla Contoy amazes with an incredible variety of bird and plant species. While in the north area you will find low-key Isla Holbox, where swimming with giant whale sharks is attracting a new wave of tourism.
There are some small Mayan ruins to explore in Cancún. El Rey is located in the Hotel Zone while El Meco, a more substantial site, is found on the mainland just outside the city. Both offer a great day trip adventure. Close by, in the Riviera Maya and the Grand Costa Maya, there are sites such as Cobá and Muyil which are also worth a visit.
